Casas Riegner at Art Basel Miami Beach 2023
Returning for the twelfth time to Art Basel Miami Beach, Casas Riegner will feature a multigenerational group of artists with an array of works in various supports and techniques that challenge conventional narratives:
- At 91 years old, Beatriz González (Bucaramanga, 1932) stands as one of the most significant living artists in Latin America. González opened a major exhibition on November 2023 curated by Cuauhtémoc Medina, at Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) in Mexico City, followed by a European tour. Her exhibition titled Beatriz Gonzalez 1965-2017, her first presentation on such a large scale outside Colombia, was showcased in Europe in collaboration with the KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, and the CAPC Musée d'art Contemporain de Bordeaux. With an important retrospective at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) in 2019, and a notable presence in their collections, Gonzalez's impact on the international art world remains unparalleled.
- Carlos Rojas (Facatativá, 1933 - 1997) is one of the main figures of abstract art in Colombia, and thus, one of the artists that defined the course of abstract art in Latin America. Even though he studied Architecture and Fine Arts in Bogotá and Rome, one could say he was self-taught inasmuch as he preferred the freedom to structure his own path and language to diplomas. In consequence, he traveled the world in search of the nutrients for his diverse passions, among which the most diverse expressions of visual arts, music, architecture, crafts, design, technology and nature can be found, as well as mystical expressions (he understood that among these were science and math). Rojas’ work can’t be categorized except by his own name, and reading it requires knowing the language that he built, step by step, at different stages of his creative trajectory. His works are part of the collections of museums such The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and the museums of modern art in cities like Bogotá, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, among others.
- Luis Roldán (Cali, 1955) is an artist whose work explores the limits of representation in art through abstraction. His work has been collected by prominent institutions such as the Museo del Barrio in New York, the Milwaukee Art Museum, and the Museums of Modern Art in Bogota and Buenos Aires. Additionally, he has had multiple solo exhibitions in Colombia, the United States, Venezuela, and Costa Rica.
- Rosemberg Sandoval (Cartago, 1959) stands as a pioneer in acknowledging the stark truth of Colombian Violence. Acclaimed for his contributions to the Colombian and Latin American art scenes through his remarkable performances, Sandoval recently had his first retrospective exhibition at Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO). He was also featured in Austria's Lentos Kunstmuseum Linz as a winner of the CIFO Achievement Award. In 2022, Sandoval addressed land management issues in Colombia in his debut show at Poland's Center for Contemporary Art. One of his most recent works, a large-scale frottage of a humble hut in the outskirts of his native Cali made with natural pigments, will be featured at ABMB.
- Luz Lizarazo (Bogotá, 1966), a mid-career artist whose work addresses the realm of the feminine, had her first monographic exhibition at Museo de Arte Moderno de Bogotá (MAMBO) in 2022. Under the title Cicatrices, the exhibition brought together some of Lizarazo’s most representative works created over the last 15 years of her prolific career; the show also traveled to La Tertulia Museum in Cali, Colombia. Ensayo sobre el vacio (Essay on the Void), a work made in 2019, made up of sixteen unreadable letters, will be featured in our ABMB presentation.
- Bernardo Ortiz (Bogotá, 1972) one of the seven artists honored with the Amant Residency Siena this past summer, will present work that intertwines his daily drawing exercises with the repetitive traditions of early Christianity. His works are part of important collections such as Tate Modern and MoMA NY. Ortiz will also be featured in the upcoming show “To Weave the Sky: Textile Abstractions in the Jorge M. Perez Collection” at Espacio23 in Miami.
- Leyla Cárdenas (Bogotá, 1975) participated in Manifesto of Fragility 16 Lyon Biennale of Contemporary Art (2022), with on-site drawing intervention and installation. Her work questions the notions of absence, memory, destruction, and the mutable nature of time. In 2017 she participated in the exhibition “Home, so Different, so Appealing” with her artwork Excision which found its place in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) as part of the Pacific Standard Time project: LA / LA of the Getty and in the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH).
- Carlos Alfonso (Popayán, 1986) delves into the intricate connections between human beings, cooking, and the earth. He has a unique artistic vision and promises to leave an enduring mark on the contemporary art landscape. Alfonso will have his first solo exhibition at Casas Riegner opening in November 2023. His work has garnered the attention of influential curators and is already a part of the Denver Museum Collection and the Banco de la República Collection in Colombia.
